SP-120S 45th Amami Dorozome Mud-dyed Selvedge Denim Regular Straight
Made specially for Studio D'Artisan's 45th Anniversary, these jeans have been made by applying Japan's ancient Amami mud dyeing techniques to a double-indigo 18oz Japanese selvedge denim, with both an indigo warp and weft. The dark brown mud dye process atop the deep blue indigo gives the denim a black look, while the shades of blue and brown deepen the depth and texture of the fabric. As the indigo and mud dyes fade and change with time and wear the texture and colour depth will intensify, so we feel that these will be a very satisfying fader that will showcase many shades and tones throughout their life. Available in Studio D'Artisan's regular straight cut, these feature a custom Amami Dorozome sewn-in tag and leather patch, and are otherwise constructed to SDA's top-quality specifications, with iron buttons, copper rivets, and durable chainstitch construction.
Amami mud dyeing is an ancient Japanese dyeing technique that has been rooted in Amami Oshima for generations upon generations. There doesn't appear to be many recorded details about its origin, however there is a record from around 1300 years ago that shows brown dye brought from the south and offered to the Tōdai-ji Buddhist temple, part of Nanto Shinchi Daiji (The Seven Great Temples of Nara.) Amami mud dye uses the muddy broth found around the roots of a decades-old Teak tree, which grow naturally on Amami Oshima. It is a dyeing method that has been handed down from ancient times, and involves repeated dyeing, over and over again in iron-rich mud fields.
These jeans are imbued with the nature of Amami Oshima, and the history of the people that have lived on the island since ancient times. It could be said that this fabric is a gift from Mother Earth, as it is rich with nature and romanticism.
