AKT03 180 Days 13.5oz Rainbow Selvedge Denim Regular Straight

$325.00 USD

EDWIN Japan has returned! First established all the way back in 1947, Tokyo-based EDWIN is without a doubt one of Japan's very first denim-focused companies, founded well before the selvedge denim scene really took off with the Osaka 5 in the 70s and 80s. Tsunemi Yonehachi was one of the very first to begin importing American selvedge denim jeans into Japan, and this is where EDWIN got its start, sparking Japan's intense love for denim. EDWIN was the very first to manufacture denim jeans in Japan in 1961, proof of the innovation, authenticity, and craftsmanship that is EDWIN's ethos. By the 1970's EDWIN had moved into innovating washed denim fabrics, having cemented the brand as an essential denim house, and are responsible for innovating industry-wide norms such as OW, one-washed raw denim, and OW, a washing technique predating stonewashing.

After stepping back from the spotlight for a few years while manufacturing and working with Lee Europe, EDWIN USA and EDWIN MiJ have returned with some wicked brand new fabrics and ideas for the modern selvedge denim market at incredible pricepoints. Welcome back EDWIN!

We have received a selection of EDWIN's brand new "Dark Pure Indigo Rainbow Selvedge" in both Regular Taper and Straight fits, featuring dry indigo and washes weighing in at 13.5oz. Custom woven by Kaihara Mills in Japan, this denim is spun on vintage machinery, at a low speed and tension to create truly vintage selvedge denim. A mixture of American and Australian long-staple cotton are used for a softer hand, with the additional benefit of the stark white colour of these cottons allowing a deeper indigo dye to occur. The warp and weft threads are spun differently for traditional texture, with the warp featuring natural middle-pitched uneven yarns to allow 1940's/50's esque fading on the warp, while the weft incorporates shorter-pitched uneven yarns, twisted tightly for a crunchier weave.

"180 Days" is a washed version of EDWIN's 13.5oz Indigo Rainbow Selvedge, intended to showcase an aging pair of raw denim, at the 180 day mark without a wash. Jeans that are washed often fade more evenly and expose more texture, but unwashed jeans like the pair that inspired this wash generate very high contrast fades in which the creases and high wear areas lighten significantly while other areas stay dark blue. EDWIN is proud to have captured the essence of vintage workwear jeans with this wash, calling this wash "truly vintage." This wash is specially produced by using resin treatments to preserve the deep blue, and hand shaving the very high wear areas. High quality, authentic washes such as EDWIN's require special attention and focus, setting these quality washes apart from modern artificial fading processes.
