This shirt features both warp and weft threads deeply dyed in indigo, which is then further dyed with Japan's traditional Amami Dorozome mud dyeing technique, giving the fabric a very, dark, basically black appearance that will showcase more underlying colour with time. Essentially, Studio D'Artisan has produced an "indigo mud dye." The deep blue and brown tones overlap, creating not just a black, but a black with a great depth of colour, as it is not really even black at all.

Amami mud dyeing is an ancient dyeing technique that has been rooted in Amami Oshima since ancient times. Amami mud is produced from the roots of Japanese teak trees, where the particles are round and thin, so it can be used as dye without damaging threads and yarn, as most mud would. Mud-dyed clothing is less likely to wrinkle, is light, does not fall apart, and is resistant to fire and dirt. Amami mud dyeing uses only the nature of Amami Oshima. The result is a gentle, deep, powerful, and astringent color that cannot be synthesized with chemical dyes. This unique and beautiful finish can only be created by the hands of passionate craftsmen, as it is the nature of Amami Oshima itself, and a tradition that keeps the history of ancient Japanese culture alive.
