Madras cloth is a lightweight cotton fabric, named after the region where it was created and primarily woven. Formerly known as Madras, Chennai city is one of India's largest metropolitan areas and textile hubs, and is located in a very hot and humid region. India is renowned for their development of loosely woven breathable fabrics, of which madras is one of the most famous. It has long been a staple of Ivy style since its popularity amongst students in the 1950s and 60s, and offers unique textures and colours that are difficult to produce outside of India. The side seams and armholes are constructed with double-needle chainstitching, a TRUE MADRAS label is sewn inside the collar, and it is finished with custom three-hole shell buttons.
