While we are always stoked for a new piece of Studio D'Artisan sashiko, this Kyoto Montsuki "Kurozome" Black is by far the king amongst our sashiko stock. This is a truly outstanding fabric, as expected from a collaboration between Kyoto Montsuki and SDA. Kyoto Montsuki is a legendary Japanese dye house with over a century of history, all centered around making the world's greatest black dye. In fact, Kyoto Montsuki has only dyed things black since 1915! This is due to their generational devotion to creating the purest black dyes ever. Kyoto Montsuki's artisanship actually upholds a Japanese tradition that dates back an entire millennia to the Heian period, a time where natural super black dyes were used to create formal attire for Samurai and Buddhist Priests.

This sashiko shirt features two workshirt style chest pockets, black-dyed nut buttons to tonally match the fabric, and a custom "Kurozome" woven tag sewn inside. The shirt is crafted from SDA's original sashiko fabric, having undergone Kyoto Montsuki's "ultimate black" dyeing process, done expertly by their artisans. D'Artisan believes that Kyoto Black have not only pursued the ultimate black to the extent that Kyoto Black is true black, but that is also embodies the colour of the "spiritual power that governs the feelings of the Japanese people." If this isn't a special shirt, what is?
